Idiot Prayers

Louie Giglio, according to this article, said that many Christians pray like idiots.  While this might sound a bit over the top, I don’t know if it really is.  I know I have been an idiot pray-er before.  Dictionary.com defines “idiot” as a “foolish or stupid person.”  Foolish people speak words without realizing what they are saying.  And to the Lord, imagine how many prayers are lifted up to him with words that are spoken without any meaning.  When we pray and have no diea what we are saying, we pray idiotically, foolishly.  And no one among us like having a conversation with someone who is looking away from us, talking to us, but only saying words of gibberish.

We must pray more prayers of repentance for our idiot prayers than we pray asking for things from Him, because we are too prone to do the latter, and we continuall pray meaninglessly.  Lord, forgive me and your Church for idiot prayers!

  1. Sam, the article you mentioned makes good use of Giglio’s quote to grab attention but falls short in getting much beyond the malady it puports to expose and correct. It neglects the great scriptural themes of prayer – praising God, thanking Him for Who He is and what He does, coming before Him in repentance, contrition, and humility.

I think it was Calvin who wrote that our prayers come to God as the lisps of a baby …

  2. I know, the article focuses too juch on those things without any sense of who God is. But I was thinking that to think intentionally about what we pray for means much, rather than let mere ramblings go only to do our DUTY to pray. But as I shared Tim, I am at fault and sin in this as well.
