The Ugly and Terrible ‘D’ Word

Sadly that’s what most people think about the word DOCTRINE. To be doctrinal means you believe something is true. And in our world, people are disdainful about anything that attempts to assume that there is truth. Biola Connections has a great article on this growing phenomenon. Interestingly, as the ECM (Emerging Church Movement) grows, so does this hatred of the word ‘doctrine.’ The sad part of this is that so-called Christian leaders, like T. D. Jakes and Brian McLaren say that they’re too concerned about sharing the Gospel so therefore they do not have the time to “split hairs” over the Trinity or the atonement. It’s a scary thought when God’s Triune relationship and how we even have a Gospel to share (the atonement) is deemed to be nothing more than ‘splitting hairs.’

  1. Sam, don’t you know that “doctrine divides”? Heh heh.

  2. Jesus said, “I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life. No one can come to the Father but by me.” Boy that truly is a dividing statement.

  4. Shhh…Tim, I don’t want anyone to know I believe in absolute truth. That’s not too popular in today’s Evangelicalism.
