Personal Thoughts

By Popular Demand – Part 3

7. One book that you wish had never been written:
What Love Is This? Calvinism’s Misrepresentation of God – Dave Hunt – When I heard of this book, I was interested because I had read other books by the author and had a high opinion of them. But this book troubled me from the start. It has a bitter, mean tone to it. It is a gross caricature of the Reformed faith constructed from shoddy research, gross misrepresentations, and biblical eisegesis. Now let me tell you what I really think – I’m kinda glad it was written. After about 2 hours with this book I put it down and started reading Calvin’s Institutes, which I read in their entirety and then went back and read sections again. So thanks, Mr Hunt, for driving me to read the right stuff. But I still wish this book had never been written.

8. One book you’re currently reading:
OK, this is really a trick question, right? ‘Cause nobody reads just one book, do they? Sheesh, next you’ll tell me that people pick up books and read them from the first page to the last page, consecutively.

I’m joking of course. But right now I am on a reading frenzy. School starts next month, so I am reading like there is a tomorrow but it is a tomorrow that won’t allow me to read (what I want to read). So here is a list of some of the books I am reading right now. There’s too many for pictures.
a. The Civil War: A Narrative: Volume 2: Fredericksburg to Meridian – Shelby Foote
b. The Fredericksburg Campaign: Winter War on the Rappahannock – Francis Augustin O’Reilly
c. Are Miraculous Gifts for Today? – Wayne Grudem, Robert Saucy, Richard Gaffin, Sam Storms, Doug Oss
d. Christian Beliefs: Twenty Basics Every Christian Should Know – Wayne Grudem, Elliot Grudem
e. Guide to Prayer – Isaac Watts
f. Apostasy from the Gospel – John Owen

9. One book you’ve been meaning to read:
Trouble of Mind and the Disease of Melancholy – Timothy Rogers – I’ve sampled this book and it is really good. One thought from early on: Don’t doubt in darkness what God shows you in the daylight. I need to read the book just to find that quote! Rogers was a pastor in the 17th century who was out of the ministry due to “melancholyâ€? before recovering and writing this book.

Discussion

One Response to “By Popular Demand – Part 3”

  1. I’ve finished 8. d, e, & f. I’ve added Dever’s _Promises Made_ and _Promises Kept_; Patterson’s _Engaging God_; something by Vaughn Roberts; Grudem/Purswell _Bible Doctrine_; and Watts again (yes, he is that good!).
