John Piper, as he so frequently does, has some great words for the church regarding election day. He quotes 1 Timothy 2:1-4:
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
And since Paul certainly did not live in a time when rulers were kind and generous and wise, and yet, he still gives thanks for such rulers, surely we must as well. This doesn’t mean that Christians should not simply lay back and do nothing and say nothing. But it is very important that we do not lose sight of:
1. Our witness before the world first and foremost, as CHRISTians (Matthew 5:16).
2. The fact that our hope is not ultimately in government, but in Christ alone (Jer 29:11)
3. The reality that no matter how good or bad things can become, God’s justice and plan cannot be thwarted (Rom 8:28; Rev 6:10).
4. The reality that one day, the King will return and make all things new, regardless of the outcome of any world event (Rom 8:18-25).
5. All of these truths, therefore we need not worry, but need to trust in Him (Matt 6:25-34)
