Personal Thoughts

Questions for Not Worthy But Worthy

  1. Before you were a Christian, what determine your worth and value?  How did that affect what you did, what you believed, and how you responded to others?  Has your faith in Christ changed your value and worth for you?  If yes, how is this evidenced in your life?  If no, why do you think this so?
  2. Can you think of any other ways that made the centurion ‘worthy’ to receive healing from Jesus?
  3. Why do you think we human beings long to belong?  Has there ever been a time where you did not belong to a particular group, where you were an outsider looking in?  How did that make you feel?  How did you respond to such an experience?
  4. Sam talked about the ‘reciprocity of love,’ that human beings will love only those who love them in return.  Why do you think we love in this way?  How can we move beyond this type of earthly love?
  5. Do you appreciate people for simply who they are rather than what they can do for you or give you?
  6. Read through Ephesians 2:1-5 together.  List the different ways we did not love God.  How does God break the pattern of reciprocal love?  How does receiving this love empower us to also break the pattern of reciprocal love?
  7. Create a list of different external factors that you believe people determine their personal worth.  How can such a list lead to anger, frustration, depression, jealousy?  Do you ever struggle with these things?  How can you overcome determining your worth based on these external factors?
  8. Why is humility a natural response to a true understanding Christ, as we see in the centurion?  How can you grow in humility?
  9. Proverbs 15:33 says: “The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.”  What do you think honor is?  How does humility actually lead to honor?  Why do you think people have a hard time seeing this to be true?  In what ways have you seen this lived out?
  10. Jesus marveled at the centurion and there is only one other place in Scripture where Jesus marvels (Mark 6:6).  Why do you think Jesus marveled, especially in light of Mark 6:6?  What does this say about Jesus’ view of the Jewish elders’ understanding of worth?  What does this say about Jesus’ understanding of the centurion’s view of worth?
  11. How can knowing how Jesus makes you worthy transform your life?
